It’s been six months since the last time the oil was changed, and the car has not shown no symptoms of over-filling or under-filling, so I didn’t really check it.
But, after Long Voyager complained about modern cars consuming too much oil; I checked the oil level for my car to a not very nice surprise.
Yes, the dealers don’t even understand how much oil the car needs aaaaand, they overfilled it. Although there have been no indications that there’s way too much oil (there’s no CEL, no smoke, no strange noises, oil temp and pressure is fine, so is engine temp) other than the venerable dipstick.
So, time to search for an independent shop, and to explain my displeasure in great detail, perhaps at an elevated tone, to the techs at Kia through the phone.
Use the comment section below to call me a baad, baaaaaad owner for not realizing until now, even if the dealer techs showed a couple of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

I like to make a habit out of the phrase “Trust, but verify”
People are just too error prone to do otherwise.
I hope you record the telling off on the phone... something about angry Spanish yelling makes me relax a little (when it’s not pointed at me)

I don’t want to be rude at the wrong person, so it’s probably going to be rather tame.
I should probably ask for a job as a tech because I clearly know a lot more about servicing
their cars than they do.

How long had the car been off before you checked the oil? Also, some dipstick aren’t accurate for over filling. I measure out the correct amount of oil for my Jeep and it still reads a bit high.

I wonder if there is a service bulletin that instruct s dealers to overfill by a quart to reduce people running out between oil changes. I read an article a year or two back about BMW batteries failing on one model because they didn’t account for US driving style. To fix it I think they reduced the oil change interval so people would come in earlier and the added a battery replacement to that service.. F ixed!

I think it was that the alternator uncoupled du ring certian drive behavior like long cruising. They could have fixed it by reprograming the computer but it would impact rated mpg. I assume they wre worried about lawsuits so the make the customer replace a battery every oil change.

I did four readings.
The first reading was with the car cold, it had not ran for over two days.
The other three were five minutes after warming it up to operating temperature -and driving- as the owner’s manual request.

I'll never go back to the dealer after the last experience with them trying to rip me off. I can put up with a lot, but trying to steal from me is a pretty quick way to send me on my way.

My boat reads high when I change the oil in it. Then, after about 4 trips, it reads about a 1/4" low, where it stays until the next oil change.

My standard oil check procedure:
I always check my oil hot after a nice long drive and never cold. I will only do cold to see if its really low (1qt+) if its in the safe range I’ll do the following check procedure.
Park on a level surface turn the engine off and wait 5 minutes to allow the oil to drain back into the sump.
Pull dipstick, wipe clean, insert, check front side and back side level. (My mopar sticks are stamped on one side and you can see the stamp line from the back too. Mustang has holes.) Make sure oil level is at or near the top line. Add as necessary until level is correct.
During oil changes i put in 1-1/2 less then what the spec in the owners manual calls for depending on the vehicle. Get the oil hot do the above procedure amd adjust oil level as necessary until full. My WJ calls for 6 quarts with a filter change, if i do that im a 1/2 quart overfull every time. The dipstick is what i base my "full" capacity measurements off of and not the spec in the manual.

They made other strange maintenance errors... but I guess that since its a twin turbo they expect higher oil consumption

That was really dumb on KIA’s part. When you do an oil change, the fresh oil is cold. If you have to warm the engine up before checking the oil, then adding more if you’re short is going to be tricky, as the new oil will be cold. You’ll have to warm the new oil up before checking. That’s why pretty much every ICE engine ever made that still has a dipstick requires a cold reading.
Also, warming engine oil up takes at least twenty minutes, so it’s pretty nuts to require warm engine reading. What are they suppose to do, drive the car around for twenty minutes for an oil change? I’d be more pissed at KIA for not designing their dipstick properly.
My BMW requires warm readings but it doesn’t have a dipstick. I know the computer will read low when I do an oil change. Mine takes exactly 5L so I know I’m good as long as I’m using a 5L container.

Overfilling causes it to burn off excess, in turn causing it to be low on oil...

Should have seen the look on their faces when I pulled the dipstick in their service bay before leaving on my last oil change.
Of course the one service guy was staring at me with this “
WTF are you doing?”
look.
I looked at him and said, “Just making sure the job was actually done right this time”, then got in and left.
The entertaining part was the 4 other customers standing at the service desk who saw/heard the whole thing.
